Boston Bombing Anniversary: How the Networks Are Covering

$
0
0

Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of the tragic events of April 15, 2013, when two bombs went off during the Boston Marathon. The broadcast news and cable news networks have programmed their coverage to highlight the events and its anniversary.

As a result of the Boston bombings, three people were killed and more than 260 people injured. That would launch a manhunt for the men responsible for the attack: Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Ultimately, Tamerlan was killed and his heavily injured brother was captured, but not before they allegedly killed an MIT police officer, carjacked an SUV and initiated an exchange of deadly gunfire with police in Watertown, Mass.

One year later, there are memorials planned, survivors are telling their stories and we’ll go back to analyze the day’s events and what we’ve learned about them since. Specifically, between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. EST, a flag-raising ceremony and moment of silence will be held at the marathon finish line — to mark the time and place where the two bombs exploded a year ago.

See below for how the broadcast and cable networks are covering the anniversary (updated as information becomes available):

ABC
— ABC News: It will air a special report to mark the anniversary of the Boston marathon bombing on Tuesday from approximately 2:35-2:55 p.m. ET. “Good Morning America” and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos anchors from New York and will be joined by ABC News consultant Ray Kelly in his first television appearance on ABC since joining the network. “Nightline” and “Good Morning America” Weekend Edition co-anchor Dan Harris will also report live from Boston.

– ABC News Digital: It will offer a look at the hero survivors and their uplifting stories of strength and perseverance through images and video over the past year of recovery, as well as, roll out a series of original videos around the anniversary and showcase the most iconic moments from the tragic day. ABC News Digital will air live online at the ABC News website.

– ABC News Radio: Live coverage of the ceremony and the anniversary throughout the day on Tuesday. ABC News correspondent Scott Goldberg will anchor with ABC News correspondent Aaron Katersky in Boston.

CBS

– CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley will broadcast live from Boston and cover the moment of silence at the Boston Marathon finish line honoring the victims and survivors of last year’s bombings. He’ll also revisit the investigation and speak with the federal investigators who led the manhunt for the Tsarnaev brothers.

– Correspondent Jeff Glor will cover the commemorative events of the day.

– National correspondent Chip Reid will sit down with “Danny,” the carjacking victim who helped lead police to the two suspects.

– CBS correspondent Elaine Quijano will speak with veteran Boston Globe photographer John Tlumacki, who has chronicled the recovery of a mother and daughter who were both wounded by the blast.

CNN
— Cable news network will provide coverage of the anniversary throughout the day.

– Brooke Baldwin and Jason Carroll are in Boston

– CNN will broadcast the moment of silence this afternoon.

MSNBC
— Will be airing the moment of silence this afternoon live.

NBC
— NBC News will provide a special report on the broadcast network during this afternoon’s tribute event marking the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. Brian Williams will anchor from New York, joined by Ron Mott in Boston.

– NBC Nightly News is planning reports from its team that covered the bombing last year: Anne Thompson on the anniversary and Tuesday’s events; Pete Williams on the approaching trail of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev; and Rehema Ellis on Team MR8, a group of 100 people from around the country who are running this year’s marathon in memory of 8-year-old victim Martin Richards.

Bryan Singer Reveals New Characters in First Page of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Script (Photo)

The internet’s comic book fans collectively squealed with excitement when Bryan Singer posted his first ever Instagram picture containing a treatment he co-wrote for “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Though the writer/director’s photo was cropped tightly, the script for the eight movie in the “X-Men” franchise explicitly references The Four Horsemen, henchmen of the antagonist Apocalypse. Though their characters’ inclusion in the film was rumored, this is the first confirmation of their involvement.

The picture of the script also shows the opening shot is set in the Nile. Considering the post-credit sequence of the last film “X-Men: Days of Future Past” took place in the desert, it’s perhaps safe to assume this is picking up where the 2014 movie took off.

Unfortunately for Channing Tatum fans, there was no mention of his character Gambit.

Keep in mind, though, it’s a treatment dated “06.06.14,” and every detail of the script is likely subject to change.

Singer’s co-writers listed on the script include Michael Dougherty (“X-Men 2”), Dan Harris (“X-Men 2”) and Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past.”).

The director had been notably absent from promotion for this summer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” due to ongoing legal troubles from a lawsuit accusing Singer of sex abuse.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is scheduled to hit theaters May, 2016.

Dan Abrams Being Replaced by Byron Pitts as ‘Nightline’ Co-Anchor

$

ABC “Nightline” co-anchor Dan Abrams, who previously served as a General Manager and host at MSNBC, and in recent years created Abrams Media led by signature site Mediaite, will anchor his final “Nightline” Thursday.

On Thursday, ABC News President James Goldston announced Abrams will be returning to managing Abrams Media full-time while remaining with ABC as its chief legal analyst.

Replacing Abrams will be Byron Pitts, who’s been ABC’s chief national correspondent since 2013.

Abrams has co-anchored “Nightline” since June 2013.

Read Goldston’s memo below:

Team,

I want to share big news for two of our key players, Dan Abrams and Byron Pitts.

Earlier this year Dan came to talk to me about taking on a new role at ABC News and returning to his true passion – running the websites and company he founded, Abrams Media.

Dan has decided to step back from his full-time role as Nightline anchor after tonight, but I’m very happy to report that he will bring us his brilliant insights as chief legal analyst for ABC News for years to come. From Trayvon Martin and Bill Cosby to Ferguson and Staten Island, we count on him to provide legal context and scrutiny to important stories that capture national attention.

As co-anchor of Nightline Dan has showcased some of our best storytelling and been a crucial part of the Nightline team that has taken us to #1 in late night. On a personal level, I wish Dan great success expanding Abrams Media beyond the impressive milestones they have already achieved. I’m thrilled that Dan has committed to continue to appear on all our programs and platforms for many more years.

I’m delighted to announce that Byron Pitts will join Nightline as co-anchor. Byron is a truly passionate storyteller and deep thinker about the critical issues of our time, as his work from Soweto to Ferguson makes clear.

Last week for our “Race. Justice. In America” series, Byron delivered compelling reports told with incredible compassion and his singularly distinctive voice. He reported on the distrust between the public and the police in his hometown of Baltimore, and he delved deeply into how fathers and sons talk about race.

Our chief national correspondent since 2013, Byron has been committed to finding stories and voices rarely heard on the national stage. He profiled an American lawyer – inspired by Nelson Mandela – helping hundreds of South African orphans go to school; got a closer look at New Orleans’ comeback as the Hollywood of the South; and memorably talked to the self-described pope of Satanism preaching in the heart of the Bible Belt.

I couldn’t be happier we’ll now see even more of his outstanding work on Nightline and all our platforms.

Byron joins the Nightline team in its strongest position yet in its new time period; in November they won the third consecutive sweep in Total Viewers. Turning in their best results ever at 12:30 A.M., they showed us once again that great storytelling leads to great results. With Roxanna, Dan Harris, Juju and Byron leading the way, I know there are even more great days ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Dan and Byron on their new roles.

Leah Remini Says Scientology Views Tom Cruise Critics as ‘Evil’

Leah Remini made waves recently as another high-profile defector from the Church of Scientology, and now she’s getting ready to share more details in a new interview.

In a new ABC News promo for her sit-down interview on “20/20,” the former “King of Queens” star discussed how Tom Cruise, the church’s most famous member, was a factor in her leaving.

“Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself… You are evil,” Remini told ABC’s Dan Harris.

The “King of Queens” actress also delved into how she got caught up in Scientology and the methods they used to isolate members from the rest of the world.

“The decision to leave is you are giving up everything you have ever known and everything you have worked for your whole life,” she said. “People need to understand, this has been my whole life, and I want them to understand how this happens… As time goes on, you start to lose touch with the real world. The mindset becomes ‘us against them.'”

The full interview with Remini will air Friday, Oct. 30 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

Leah Remini is continuing to push back against Scientology, the controversial religion that had previously counted her among its members since her childhood.

In a snippet from an upcoming “20/20” interview promoting her new tell-all book “Breakthrough,” Remini detailed some of the alleged brainwashing from the church, and how it can give one an unhealthy sense of superiority starting from a young age.

“Because Scientologists view children as spiritual beings, you’re not treated as a kid,” the actress explained in video that debuted on Thursday’s “GMA.” “You’re given a lot of responsibility, your ego becomes extremely inflated.”

Later, she talks about how notoriously hard it is to depart the faith.

“The decision to leave is you are giving up everything you have ever known and everything you have worked for your whole life,” she said of defecting.

Remini also explains in the clip the meaning of Church of Scientology term, to “Go on Course.” Watch the video above.

As a part of the same interview, Remini said that Scientologists view critics of Tom Cruise — the group’s most famous member — as “evil.”

“Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself… You are evil,” Remini told ABC’s Dan Harris in previously released quotes.

More from the interview will be released on Friday’s “Good Morning America.” The Remini tell-all conversation airs in its entirety tomorrow night on “20/20.”

Leah Remini: Scientology Wrote Me Up for Telling Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes to ‘Get a Room’ (Video)

ABC Breaking News | Latest News Videos

Leah Remini isn’t holding back details when it comes to her criticism of Scientology, the “King of Queens” star’s former religion.

The actress-turned-author also isn’t shy about dinging the church’s star congregant, Tom Cruise.

“At first it’s very effusive, it’s very loving — you get the laser in on you and you’re the most important thing that ever happened,” Remini recalled of her initial meeting with Cruise during a recent ABC News interview.

As one might expect from how this all shook out, that feeling didn’t last very long.

During her time at the church — which spanned three decades — Remini was once invited over to Cruise’s house to teach him salsa dancing. Two high-ranking Scientology officials were also there when they arrived — as was Cruise’s new girlfriend at the time, Katie Holmes.

“He was, like, forcibly kissing Katie,” Remini remembered in an interview clip unveiled Friday on “Good Morning America.”

“I said, ‘Hey, get a friggin’ room.'”

“I was written up for that,” she admitted, referring to be tattled on in what Scientology calls a “Knowledge Report.”

“Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself … You are evil,” Remini told ABC’s Dan Harris in the same clip.

A representative for Holmes issued a statement on Friday: “I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”

The tell-all conversation airs in its entirety tonight on “20/20.” Remini is making the rounds promoting her new book, “Troublemaker.”

Watch the video above.

The father of Scientology leader David Miscavige has written a book after his exit from the Church, and will sit down with ABC’s Dan Harris for a “20/20” interview on Friday.

Ron Miscavige penned the book, “Ruthless: Scientology, My Son David Miscavige, and Me,” a memoir about his time in the Church. Scientology is hitting back hard, calling his claims “outright lies,” but former Scientology member Leah Remini stepped in to defend Miscavige.

“He has a right to tell his story,” the actress told ABC in a sneak peek for the special. “I tracked him down, I called him, I offered my support because I know he must have felt alone. I just wanted him to know that we were willing to take him in.”

Remini, who has not been shy about her criticism of the new-age religion since leaving the Church in 2013, added, “There is no place for them to go unless they have family, which is very rare outside the Church. I immediately said he should write a book because his story is important.”

Miscavige will sit down with Harris on Friday night at 10 p.m. to talk about his son’s journey throughout the Church of Scientology, which started when the family joined in 1970. Miscavige was part of the Church for more than 40 years, 27 of which were spent working for its Sea Organization.

“He wasn’t always that way,” Ron Miscavige said of David. “When he was kid, he was a lovable kid.”

Miscavige announced plans to write the book last July, and the younger Miscavige is threatening a defamation lawsuit against his own father should the book be published, according to Mediaite.

“My plans for the book haven’t changed at all,” said the father.

ABC’s “Nightline” is returning to its roots with “Inside the Final 30,” a daily look at the historical presidential election and how the Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump showdown is being covered.

When “Nightline” debuted in 1979, it was a daily update on the Iran hostage crisis. The show will once again stick with the same topic every night with a daily documentary series leading up to Election Day.

While the hostage crisis lasted 444 days, the election is less than a month away. “Nightline” executive prouder Roxanna Sherwood told TheWrap that the show aims to take viewers behind the scenes on the campaign trail.

“It’s important that while we go about our reporting on a race made for the history books, we provide as much insight as we can,” Sherwood said “The goal is to give our viewers as much transparent context to some of the most defining moments of our time and transcend the daily headlines to provide a broader perspective.”

Throughout the 30 days, “Nightline” co-anchor Byron Pitts and chief foreign correspondent Terry Moran will travel around the country on the trail to speak with voters as they come to their final decisions. The series will include reporting from “Nightline” co-anchors Juju Chang and Dan Harris, as well as correspondent David Wright.

The series kicked off on Monday with a behind-the-scenes look at the second presidential debate.

Dan Harris to Step Down as Anchor of ABC’s ‘Nightline’

$
0
0

Dan Harris is stepping down from his post as anchor of ABC’s “Nightline” to focus on growing 10% Happier, a business based on his 2014 book of the same name.

“It is a high class problem: I simply have too many awesome things on my plate, between weekend ‘GMA,’ ‘Nightline,’ and the expanding 10% juggernaut (which, by the way, never would have come into being without an astounding level of support from ABC News),” Harris said in a memo to staff Tuesday. “So why, given all the options, did I decide to drop the ‘Nightline’ anchor gig? Because, frankly, you deserve an anchor who gives it his or her all. This team of amazing producers – who work all hours and travel all over the world – has the right to expect an on-air representative who is in the trenches with you day after day. And the circumstances of my life simply will not allow that right now.”

Harris, who has been with ABC News since 2000 and co-anchored “Nightline” since 2013, will remain as a co-anchor of the weekend of “GMA” and host ABC News’ “10% Happier” podcast.

“I’m happy to tell you that he’ll continue to report his trademark powerful and important, deeply reported stories for ‘Nightline’ and across ABC News,” Goldstone wrote in his own memo to the news division.

“Dan has traveled the world fearlessly for an up close look at some of the most dangerous places on the planet, from Rio de Janeiro’s war on drugs and Vladimir Putin’s Russia to the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel’s drug operations in Mexico and notorious gang violence in El Salvador,” he continued. “At the same time, it’s been incredibly exciting to witness how Dan’s thriving 10% Happier franchise has grown from a best-selling book to an award-winning podcast, highly-rated app and second best-selling book, drawing millions of fans. It’s a testament to his hard work and a reflection of how vital meditation and mindfulness have become in our modern culture. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.”

See Harris’ full memo to staff below.

Team,

It is surreal to step away from your dream job.

The irony is not lost on me. In my book, 10% Happier, I wrote at length about how I fought and pleaded to anchor Nightline. But it is the success of that book — and its spawn: a podcast and a tech startup — that are the reason I now have to step away.

It is a high class problem: I simply have too many awesome things on my plate, between weekend GMA, Nightline, and the expanding 10% juggernaut (which, by the way, never would have come into being without an astounding level of support from ABC News).

So why, given all the options, did I decide to drop the Nightline anchor gig? Because, frankly, you deserve an anchor who gives it his or her all. This team of amazing producers — who work all hours and travel all over the world — has the right to expect an on-air representative who is in the trenches with you day after day. And the circumstances of my life simply will not allow that right now.

I am not going away. I don’t know where my office will be, but it won’t be far. (Which means Jasmine won’t have to make an arduous journey for the next practical joke she wants to play on me.) More importantly, I will continue working on big, investigative stories. The reports I have been able to file for this show — from the Congo, Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil, Mexico, even Papua New Guinea — have been some of the most meaningful work of my life.

I love Nightline. I love doing these kinds of stories. And I love being part of this incredible culture. None of that will change.

It has been an absolute privilege for me to share the anchor seat for the past five and a half years on one of the most insightful and well-respected news shows on television. Nightline is in great hands with Steve, Juju, Byron and our team of senior producers.

I want to say thank you to everyone at Nightline — for doing some of the best work in broadcast news, for establishing and maintaining one of the most extraordinary collaborative work cultures I have ever seen, and for making fun of me when I deserve it (daily). I look forward to much more.

With immense gratitude,

Dan

And here’s Goldston’s note.

Team,

After nearly 6 years, Dan Harris has decided to step back from his anchor duties on Nightline to dedicate more time to his rapidly growing 10% Happier business and other roles at ABC News. I’m happy to tell you that he’ll continue to report his trademark powerful and important, deeply reported stories for Nightline and across ABC News.

Dan has traveled the world fearlessly for an up close look at some of the most dangerous places on the planet, from Rio de Janeiro’s war on drugs and Vladimir Putin’s Russia to the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel’s drug operations in Mexico and notorious gang violence in El Salvador.

At the same time, it’s been incredibly exciting to witness how Dan’s thriving 10% Happier franchise has grown from a best-selling book to an award-winning podcast, highly-rated app and second best-selling book, drawing millions of fans. It’s a testament to his hard work and a reflection of how vital meditation and mindfulness have become in our modern culture. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

While Dan may be stepping away from the Nightline anchor desk, he will continue to anchor the weekend editions of GMA with Eva, Whit, Adrienne and Rob and host the 10% Happier podcast.

Nightline has long been distinguished by captivating storytelling and in-depth, tenacious journalism. I’m incredibly proud of Steve, Juju, Byron and the entire team for carrying that legacy into the future, including a new slate of documentary features to come. There’s much more great work ahead from this stellar team.

Please join me in thanking Dan for his tremendous work as anchor at Nightline. Below you can read a personal note from him.

ABC News Live Goes All in on Longform Stories Like ‘Guardians of the Amazon’

$
0
0

Since launching a month ago, the new iteration of ABC News Live, the new streaming platform from ABC News, has found content that sets it apart: Longform stories.

ABC News Live launched in 2018 on browsers or devices like Roku or Apple TV, where it still lives today. But it largely covered breaking news or big events. The new programming strategy launched Feb. 3 created original shows and brought on designated anchors, like Linsey Davis.

While no viewership data is available yet for February, January 2020 saw 13 million viewers and a year-over-year increase of 155%. ABC News Live viewership, on average, has grown 21% each month since its 2018 launch, but executives expect it to grow even more now that the new strategy is in place.

“The product that we ultimately now have on the channel has been an amazing opportunity, just by the sheer support and resources that ABC News has put behind us,” Justin Dial, senior executive producer of ABC News Live, told TheWrap. “The power of the company, the news-gathering and the reporting that is done each and every day here now has yet another outlet for that information and storytelling to be showcased.”

Dial explained that during ABC News Live’s programming such as the “ABC News Live All Access” show, which airs at 8 p.m. ET, stories and interviews that may have aired earlier on ABC’s traditional shows like “Good Morning America” can be expanded and run in longer versions.

“We can open up and air a little bit longer version of reporting that’s been done all day long on the network that we want to highlight,” Dial explained.

Dan Harris, a correspondent who’s been able to showcase his reporting in longer cuts with the freedom afforded by the ABC News Live platform, told TheWrap, “I’ve been doing longform stuff on ‘Nightline.’ That’s been the longest form we’ve had for probably 15 years, and the ceiling on the number of minutes that your story could run was 16 or 17 for my whole career here.”

He covers international issues (think child slaves, drug wars or gang wars) and “found over time that our viewers really love this stuff.”

So, he said, “when I heard that ABC News Live had the appetite for hours, that was incredibly compelling. And it just so happened that I had recently shot a story that definitely had enough content to last an hour.”

ABC News Live gave Harris the chance to go deeper with the new special “Guardians of the Amazon,” which profiles the Arariboia Indigenous Reserve’s Guajajara tribe. Armed with hunting rifles, bows and arrows, machetes and chains, the group has formed a paramilitary operation called the “Guardians of the Forest,” tracking down and apprehending illegal loggers.

What has the reaction been like as he’s taken advantage of the longer time limits on the new platform?

“Some of my colleagues are insanely jealous and they want to be making documentaries for ABC News Live, so I suspect Justin [Dial] is going to be getting lots of emails from people with a lot of ideas,” Harris says.

George Stephanopoulos’ Rep Lobbies For Him to Become Next Host of ‘Jeopardy!’ (Exclusive)

Following Alex Trebek’s death on Sunday at age 80, George Stephanopoulos’ rep is lobbying for the ABC News anchor to become the next host of the hit game show “Jeopardy!,” a highly placed person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

Stephanopoulos’s agent Alan Berger did not respond to TheWrap’s request for comment, but a knowledgeable individual close to the “Good Morning America” co-host denied that he was “actively” pursuing the role. However, the highly placed person told TheWrap that Stephanopoulos has his eye on the lucrative position and that his agent was lobbying hard at ABC, where he serves as ABC News’ chief anchor and political correspondent.

ABC-owned TV stations have held the syndication rights to the game show for decades, but there are other stake holders who will have a say in choosing Trebek’s replacement: distributor CBS Television and producer Sony Television. A spokesperson for ABC News declined to comment. Neither Sony nor CBS Television responded to requests for comment.

Other members of the ABC News division, including weekend “GMA” anchor Dan Harris, are also pitching themselves as the next “Jeopardy!” host, according to the insider. A spokesperson for Harris did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Even before Trebek’s death, there had been suggestions that former champion Ken Jennings might be a contender to take over as the show’s host. This season, Jennings was named a consulting producer, a job that includes some on-camera presentation. Many people in the industry saw that hiring as a signal that Jennings, a legend among fans of the show and a popular Twitter personality, was being groomed to replace Trebek upon retirement or death.

“The show is not announcing plans for a new host at this time,” “Jeopardy!” said as part of a media announcement on Sunday.

Trebek, who has hosted the show since its 1984 relaunch, had batch-taped enough episodes so that his final appearance will air on Christmas Day 2020. He taped his final episode in the studio on Oct. 29, the show said.

ABC’s syndication deal for the program was re-upped in late 2018.

Stephanopoulos will turn 60 in February. Before his days as a TV newsman, he was a Democratic political operative and President Bill Clinton’s White House communications director.

Though Stephanopoulos carries a lofty title and a great deal of respect at ABC News, “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir is being positioned as the future of the Disney-owned media brand’s news operation, the insider said. In recent years, ABC News has made strides in TV ratings with the 47-year-old Muir as the anchor of its nightly news broadcast.

In addition to co-anchoring”Good Morning America” alongside Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan, Stephanopoulos also hosts the Sunday morning politics recap “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.

If he were to land the gig, there would be some logistics involved since “GMA” tapes in New York City while the “Jeopardy!” studio is located in Culver City, California.

“Jeopardy!” is currently the third highest-rated syndicated series on TV, behind only “Judge Judy” and “Family Feud.” That positioning makes it the second highest-rated syndicated game show of the 2020-21 television season. With perennial ratings champion “Judge Judy” ending at the conclusion of this season, that vacancy will open the door for game shows to rule syndication.

“Good Morning America” weekend co-anchor Dan Harris announced Sunday that he is exiting ABC News after two decades to focus on his meditation company, Ten Percent Happier.

“I am going to be leaving ABC News in two months,” Harris said on air. “This was a difficult decision for me. As some of you may know, I’ve been spending a lot of time on my extracurricular gig, my side hustle, a meditation company, called Ten Percent Happier. It’s been a lot to juggle and even though I’m a public proponent of work/life balance, if I’m honest, I’ve struggled to follow my own advice.”

After 21 years at ABC News, Harris added that co-anchoring the weekend edition of “Good Morning America” “has been one of the highlights of my life. My colleagues, both on and off the air, have become like a family. I really do love these people, and I’m gonna miss them horribly.”

After suffering an on-air panic attack in 2004, Harris turned to meditation and soon became an advocate for the practice. That led to a 2014 book, “10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Really Works – a True Story” as well as his own company, which includes a mobile meditation app as well as a podcast.

Since joining ABC News in 2000, Harris made a name for himself anchoring the network’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He then anchored “World News Sunday” from 2006 to 2011. He has served as co-anchor of “Good Morning America” weekend edition since 2010.
